HST 259 British Empire Since 1783 3 Credit(s) W-II This course is an introduction to the British Empire since 1783. It traces the history of the “Second British Empire”, a period marked by unprecedented expansion and a transition from the older colonies of the Atlantic world to the new domains in Asia and Africa. Through lecture, discussion and writing-intensive assignments, this course offers an introduction to the political, economic, social and cultural history of the empire’s expansion in Asia and Africa throughout the nineteenth century and its eventual dissolution in the twentieth century. Three lecture hours per week. Prerequisite: WI course.
