HST 256 Modern India 3 Credit(s) HP WC Through lecture and discussion, the student is introduced to major events and themes in the modern history of India, from the rise of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century to the colonial period of the late 18th and 19th centuries, the decades of the freedom struggle in the early 20th century, and the rapid political and socio-economic changes that have occurred since partition and independence in 1947. The course emphasizes, in addition to important political changes, aspects of cultural and economic history.Three lecture hours per week. Not open to students who have taken HIS 396.
