MUS 383 Ear Training IV

This course extends the aural skills of music majors by emphasizing ear training in musical systems beyond the Euro-American tradition. Examining selected world musics from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, students will broaden their abilities to hear and perform melodies and rhythms by studying non-western uses of mode (Hindustani raga, Javanese pathet, Persian dastgah, etc.), cyclical and
interlocking rhythmic patterns (Hindustani tala, Javanese irama, mbira patterns from Zimbabwe, etc.), and other elements of human music making such as ornamentation, improvisation, timbre, and coordination of social activities such as labor and dance. Required for all Music majors. Three lecture hours per week.
Prerequisite: MUS 333 and MUS 332.
