POL 374 Politics of India

3 Credit(s) WC
India is a puzzle to comparative politics. It is a thriving democracy and a rising superpower despite its huge diversity, entrenched inequalities, and its location in a volatile region. India has a rapidly growing economy, yet still holds a large proportion of the world’s poor. This course explores these paradoxes and introduces students to the political institutions and contemporary political life of India and of its close neighbors, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan. The course also examines the ties between India and the West, both historically and today. Three lecture hours per week.
