EDC 406 Literacy Development II

This second course in the literacy sequence focuses on ways to assess children’s literacy development, including formative and summative reading and writing assessments. Candidates apply knowledge learned in the course and in Literacy Development I to assess, design, and implement instruction for an individual child in a designated early childhood or elementary setting. Candidates will begin to develop a repertoire of instructional approaches, resources and materials that will increase as they progress through the methods courses and student teaching. Candidates keep records of tutoring lessons, construct materials, and select and use children’s literature from print and digital resources in support of instruction. This course emphasizes writing and revision with the assessment report written in the language of the profession for specific audiences. Three lecture hours per week. Field-based assignments are required.
