SMS 781 - Methods of Teaching Secondary Physical Education3 Credit(s) This course is the second of two designed to provide students with the training to be a teacher of Secondary Physical Education at the middle or high school level. It will offer a general study of the background and philosophies of teaching Secondary Physical Education, with a focus on methods and materials in the classroom, curricular issues and professional concerns, analysis of the teaching/learning processes, and a study of relevant national standards and the Massachusetts state standards for Physical Education. The course represents a continuation of students’ growth in attaining the Professional Standards for Teaching (PST’s), revisiting many of them at the practice level before demonstrating them in the practicum semester. Three lecture hours per week. Field placement and field based assignments are required.
Pre-requisite: Permission of the department chairperson and acceptance into licensure program.
