HGS 887 - Turkey and the Armenian Genocide

3 Credit(s) This course examines the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923. The course focuses on the ideological and political objectives of the Ottoman/Turkish state policy of genocide against the historic Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek populations of Asia Minor, the physical annihilation of these peoples, aspects of the legacy of the Genocide, and the subsequent official Turkish campaign of genocide denial as a critical instrument in the construction of a modern Turkish national state and nationalist identity. Three lecture hours per week.
