PSY 344 Topics in Social and Cultural Diversity

This course will examine the psychological research and theory on a topic of social and cultural diversity selected by individual instructors teaching the course. Examples may include, but are not limited to, the psychology of prejudice and discrimination, racial and ethnic identity development, sexual orientation, the psychology of social class, multi-cultural psychology, or some combination of these topics. Students will consider how bias, explicit and implicit, and ideology relate to inequality in power and/or resources; gain an increased awareness of and appreciation for diverse perspectives; explore their own experiences, privilege, and positions within power structures and groups; discuss the dynamics of prejudice and oppression; and consider similarities and differences across cultures and groups within the United States. Three lecture hours per week.
Prerequisites: At least one of the following: PSY215, PSY216, PSY217, or PSY218, and at least three additional credits of courses numbered PSY205-299. Completion of a W-I course.
