EDU 742A - Literacy Development and Processes

3 Credit(s) This course examines the cognitive, sociocultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on early literacy development and evidence-based strategies to assess and support acquisition (birth to eight). Topics include the interrelations of oral language and foundational skills; systematic and explicit phonics instruction to support word recognition; the role of early writing; and how vocabulary supports decoding and comprehension. Participants also critique the types of texts for beginning readers. Using research to close the research-to-practice gap will also be addressed. Requires 25 pre-practicum hours.
