EDU 814 - Disciplinary Literacy in the Content Areas3 Credit(s) What does it mean to read and write like a scientist, historian, or mathematician? In this course, participants learn evidence-based practices for teaching literacy across the content areas (i.e., processes common across disciplines) and discipline-specific literacy strategies (i.e., unique to each discipline). Specifically, students will learn strategies related to connecting content-specific standards to students’ interests, backgrounds, languages, and experiences to support engagement and interest; assessing content-area literacy knowledge in culturally and linguistically appropriate ways; selecting print and digital texts and matching them to individual students’ instructional goals; teaching content-specific writing processes; and supporting multilingual learners. Evidence-based practices to effectively connect literacy strategies to discipline-specific frameworks and practices, including academic and domain-specific vocabulary, will be emphasized. Field-based assignments are required.
