SWK 704 - Social Work Practice with Individuals, Families, and Groups I

3 Credit(s) This course represents the first of two consecutive “foundation year” practice courses. Skill and knowledge acquisition is centered around the phases of the helping process which include engagement, assessment, contracting, intervention, evaluation, and termination. The course begins by delineating the central, unifying practice principles and theories used to guide social work practice.  The course explores and integrates the values and ethics of the social work profession.   Integral to the course is the practice of self-awareness and the professional “use of self” which are needed to foster an interpersonal helping relationship. Therefore, students will examine ways in which their own personal values, perceptions, and social and cultural identities may influence the helping process with client systems. (3 cr)
