EDC 720 - Literacy Methods in the Early Primary Grades3 Credit(s) In this third course in the literacy sequence, teacher candidates will apply knowledge of evidence-based, high-quality literacy instruction essential for short and long-term academic success. They will implement engaging reading and writing experiences to support Massachusetts state standards in grades PreK-2 that effectively motivate and support the literacy and language development of all students, taking into account cultural, linguistic, and academic needs. Candidates will analyze and select high-quality and culturally relevant print/digital curricular materials and texts, provide opportunities for students to identify as successful readers and writers, make data-based decisions for grouping students and designing small group instruction, and plan/teach explicit, systematic lessons to support the development of foundational skills, writing, reading comprehension, and vocabulary/oral language. Field-based assignments are required. To be taken concurrently with the pre-practicum fieldwork seminar. Three lecture hours per week.
Pre-requisites: A minimum grade of B- in EDC 406, EDS 424, EDS 824 , or department consent
