CRJ 258 Forensic Instrumentation

This course will expose students to analytical techniques and equipment used in the geological sciences and their applications to forensic science questions. Theory, collection, measurement, and data interpretation will be stressed to build experiences in the technical side of scientific analyses.  The course will be split into two sections: field analysis and laboratory analysis. Field analysis will include, but not be limited to, geochemical probes, grab sampling, and in situ interpretation of earth materials. Laboratory analysis will include, but not be limited to, elemental analysis, isotope ratio mass spectrometry, ion chromatography, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. A focus will be placed on the applied aspect of accurate sample collection, analysis, and interpretation for the wide range of scientific evidence. This course will be project based, with active experiential laboratory and data processing activities. Three lecture hours per week. Cross listed with GLS258. Not open to students who have received credit for GLS258.
Prerequisites: One Geological Sciences 100-level laboratory course, or CRJ 260, or permission of the Department Chairperson.
