GLS 137 Exploring Geology Through Rock Climbing

This course is designed to introduce students to the skills of indoor and outdoor rock climbing and the basics of geology. The course will involve physical activities to teach students climbing terms, knots, techniques, equipment, and safety practices for indoor climbing, top-rope climbing, and rappelling. Additionally, this course will introduce students to fundamental concepts and processes in geology. Students will engage with different rock types and rock structures, think about their origins, and explore how these features affect their climbing experience. Cross-listed with SMS137. This course meets once per week for three hours and will require several class meetings off-site and/or weekend field trips.
