General Education Requirements

Competencies

Competencies must be completed within the student’s first 30 credits.

♣ General Education Categories (34-35 credits total)

FYS, W-I, and OC courses must be completed within the student’s first 30 credits. Courses used to satisfy the general education requirements of the university must be taken from a minimum of six different academic disciplines. First Year Seminar and Level I Written Communications courses are exempt from this restriction.  Courses may not be used to fulfill both major discipline and general education requirements.

 ‡ Written Communication (Level II and Level III)

Courses taken for Written Communication Level II and III may be used to satisfy requirements anywhere else in a student’s program of study where they may apply.  Credits will be counted in the area where they apply.

# Scientific Reasoning General Education category courses do not have to be a sequence or be from the same discipline.

Foreign Culture (12 credits total)

• ART 232 Prehistoric, Ancient and Medieval Art
• ART 233 Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo Art
• ART 332A Art of the Modern World
• ART ___ Art History Elective (3 Credits)

♥ Required Support Courses (6 credits total)

• PSY 252 Adolescent Psychology
• ^ HST ____ American Government (3 credits)

Additional Information and Notes

♥       Students may choose to use support courses to satisfy general education categories, but may not be required to do so.  Note:  If a course is used to satisfy two or more requirements (for example, a support course and Scientific Reasoning requirement), the credits are counted in only one place.  Using a course to satisfy more than one requirement does not reduce the credit total required for graduation.

†       Art major Foundatin Requirements.  The following courses must be completed in the student’s first year in the Art Department: ART101 , 102 , and 203 .  ART303  must be completed in the student’s second year.  This applies to transfer students as well.

++     Non-licensure is only for those students who do not fulfill licensure requirements.  A 12-credit Alternative Course Approval Form is required.  The four courses may include: EDU310 , 334 , 415 , 250A , 260A , 255 , 308  or relevant courses in IDS or PSY.

^        One of the following: HST204 , 208 , or 310 .

Exceptions in the timing of courses will be made for transfer students.
