Purpose

The MAT in Spanish offers initial or professional level licensure in either elementary (P-6) or secondary (5-12) Spanish. Developed in response to the increased need in North Shore Communities for well-trained and licensed Spanish teachers, this program meets the pedagogical and content standard requirements of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education for licensure.

Non-licensure tracks are also available (see further below).

Prerequisites

A bachelor’s degree with grades of merit from an accredited college or university in an arts and sciences major

Students for whom English is not a first language must submit satisfactory scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Please note that the statement of purpose that is submitted as part of the application process for this program, must be written in Spanish.

For those seeking initial licensure, a Preliminary license in Spanish (P-6 or 5-12) is required. Preliminary licensure includes a passing score on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), both the communication and literacy portion and the Spanish subject area portion, in addition to other requirements

For those seeking professional licensure, an Initial license in Spanish (P-6 or 5-12) is required

Students who have no teacher preparation coursework or who do not possess a bachelor’s degree in the major should consult with the program coordinator

Program Requirements

Students enrolled in the MAT in Spanish choose one of four tracks: Initial level licensure (elementary or secondary) for those with a preliminary license, and Advanced Studies level program (elementary or secondary) for those who are not seeking licensure (elementary or secondary). All students complete the Spanish content core (6 courses), which includes a capstone thesis course.

Methods (2 required courses)

Practicum and Seminar (2 required courses)

*NOTE: Elementary (P-6) or Secondary (5-12) Initial Licensure students must have completed the twelve credits of education content courses, the two semester Methods course (EDC782 and EDC783), six credits of Spanish content courses and have passed the OPic proficiency exam before applying for student teaching The six credits in Spanish cannot include SPN 700 or SPN 900

Advanced Studies Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish (Elementary P-6 or Secondary 5-12) (36 credits):

Education Courses: 4 Education courses (that may include EDC 782 /EDC 783 ), selected in consultation with the program coordinator.
