Early Childhood Education - Initial Licensure

Purpose

This program is designed for individuals seeking an initial license and/or training in early childhood education, but not a degree.

General Prerequisites

A Bachelor of Arts or Science degree or at least 24 credits above the introductory level in arts and science courses, with at least 12 credits in one academic area

A passing score on the communication and literacy portion of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure

A course in child growth and development taken within the last five years or EDU 720

Program Requirements

Introductory Courses (total credits 9-19.5)

EDU 720 - Child Growth and Development (or a child development elective)
EDU 725 - Introduction to Literacy Development
EDC 710 - Fundamentals of Lesson Planning OR
EDU 737 - Applying Human Development to Teaching and Assessment
EDC 810 - Technology Methods in the Early Primary and Elementary Grades
EDG 705 - Culturally Responsive Teaching
EDS 860 - Sheltering Content for English Language Learners
Either:
EDU 990E - Teaching Students with Exceptional Learning Needs OR
EDC 795A - Universal Design for Learning Foundations AND
EDC 795B - Universal Design for Learning Methods AND
EDC 795C - Universal Design for Learning Practice
(For the second option, the remaining two UDL courses (EDC 795B and EDC 795C ) are taken as outlined below)

Practice Courses (10.5 credits)

Demonstration Courses (4.5 - 9 credits)

Total Credits: 12-39

*Candidates for initial licensure must take and pass all required sections of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure prior to entering the practicum.
