This program is designed for individuals seeking initial licensure and/or training in teaching English as a second language, but not a degree.
Admission Requirements
Program Requirements
Upon acceptance into the program, you will complete a tentative Plan of Study in consultation with the program coordinator. You must request that any transfer credits be considered at this time. PLEASE NOTE THAT NO MORE THAN THREE COURSES TAKEN AT SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY BEFORE ADMISSION CAN BE COUNTED TOWARDS THIS PROGRAM. You should meet regularly with the program coordinator to discuss your progress and revise your plan of study as needed.

Licensure Preparation Phase I: TESOL Core (Introduce: 15 credits)
Licensure Preparation Phase II: TESOL Methods (Practice: 8 credits)
Licensure Preparation Phase III: Practicum (Demonstrate: 4.5 - 9 credits)
Total Credits: 20*-32
*Specific coursework will be determined on a student-by-student basis. This will depend on standards and competencies met by any previous coursework. All students must have coursework that meets the standards outlined by NCATE/TESOL and the Massachusetts DESE. Between 6 and 10 courses will be required for this program. Participants will also complete a student teaching practicum if necessary. Core courses are outlined above. The program will require between 20-32 credits depending on a student’s prior coursework. The program coordinator will review an applicant’s transcripts against the required standards of the DESE and TESOL and may require additional coursework to ensure that all standards and competencies are met.
