This program is designed for individuals who already hold an initial license in elementary education and who are seeking a professional license and a master’s degree, or individuals who are seeking further professional development in the field.

Admission Requirements

Program Requirements


Upon acceptance into the program, you will complete a tentative Plan of Study in consultation with the program coordinator. You must request that any transfer credits be considered at this time. Please note that no more than three courses taken at Salem State University before admission can be counted towards this program. You should meet regularly with the program coordinator to discuss your progress and revise your plan of study as needed.

Select 12 credits for the Subject Matter Knowledge (SMK) courses


From the courses below you may either:

  • choose to complete 12 credits from a pre-designed strand or
  • create your own in consultation with the program coordinator.*

*You may self select to use the following courses for your professional license through the process outlined by the MA Department of elementary and secondary education.

TESOL: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages


(hybrid option; you can receive a TESOL certificate (Not an initial license) if you fill out the concurrent certificate program form with the required above EDS/ENG 770N.

Total Credits 30


Please Note:


  • All courses that will count towards the degree must be completed within six years of the date the degree is awarded.
  • Substitutions are appropriate but the program must remain at 30 credits
  • This program does not lead to endorsement for a Teaching License.
  • Any Education certificate program may be substituted for a concentration with approval of the coordinator
  • A student can create a new four course concentration in consultation with the program coordinator.
