The Master of Arts in Teaching - Mathematics is a 33.5 - 39.5 credit hour program that is to be completed within a six (6) year period, is available for those wishing to prepare for initial license in secondary mathematics or for practicing mathematics teachers who wish to earn a degree that increases their formal education in mathematics and pedagogy.

Complete, official transcripts from all undergraduate institutions attended.

Preliminary Licensure includes passing scores on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), both in the communication/literacy portion and the subject area portion appropriate for this program, in addition to other requirements.

Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree with a major in mathematics*

Students who have not completed a course in Adolescent Psychology prior to enrolling in the program will be required to complete such a course prior to enrolling in the practicum. The course may be taken at either the graduate or undergraduate level and will not count towards the credits required for degree.

*Students whose bachelor’s degree does not include a major in mathematics should consult with the program coordinator.

Program Requirements

Upon acceptance into the program, you will complete a tentative Plan of Study in consultation with the program coordinator. You must request that any transfer credits be considered at this time. Please note that no more than three courses taken at Salem State University before admission can be counted towards this program. You should meet regularly with the program coordinator to discuss your progress and revise your plan of study, as needed.

All candidates for the MAT-Mathematics must complete a minimum of 33.5 - 39.5 credit hours of graduate course work, as described below.

Course Requirements

Licensure Preparation Stage I (Introduce): Education Core (9 credits)

Licensure Preparation Stage IIA (Practice): SEI and Methods (5.5 - 8.5 credits)

Licensure Preparation Stage IIB (Practice): Advanced Teaching Methods (4 credits)

Licensure Preparation Stage III (Demonstrate): Practicum (3-6 credits)

Content Core (12 credits)

Four content courses to be selected in consultation with the program coordinator (following review of undergraduate transcript) Courses may be taken concurrently with Education courses.

Advanced Studies

M.A.T. Mathematics Advanced Studies (30 credits) This program is intended for high school mathematics teachers who want a deeper understanding of mathematical content as well as guidance in connecting mathematics with the high school curriculum. Our M.A.T. Mathematics program contains more than 12 credits of graduate level courses in the subject matter knowledge that DESE requires to advance an Initial License in Mathematics (8-12) to a Professional License in Mathematics (8-12).

Requirements: Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in mathematics or closely related field. Applicants must provide evidence that they either hold initial licensure in math 8 – 12 or else sign a statement that they are not seeking initial licensure through this program.

Variable Credit

Variable credit programs are designed to address a student’s academic plan while adhering to the program requirements and standards of the profession. Based on their background (e.g., prior coursework, select endorsements), some students may be approved for the minimum number of credits of the program and other students may need additional coursework. Students will work with the Graduate Program Coordinator to determine the best fit of courses within the structure of the program and propose the Plan of Study to the School of Graduate Studies for review and approval.
