The Master of Arts in Teaching Middle School Mathematics, a 30 credit hour program, will serve middle school teachers who already have an appropriate initial license, and who wish to complete a master’s degree program to become eligible to apply for professional licensure.

Program Requirements

Upon acceptance into the program, you will complete a tentative Plan of Study in consultation with the program coordinator. You must request that any transfer credits be considered at this time. Please note that no more than three courses taken at Salem State University before admission can be counted towards this program.

Course Requirements

Mathematics courses: (18 credits)

MSM 701 - Patterns, Relations, and Algebra for Teachers
Choose five mathematics electives from the list below.
MSM 703 - Functions and Modeling for Middle School Teachers
MSM 705 - Geometry and Measurement for Middle School Teachers
MSM 707 - Number Systems for Middle School Teachers
MSM 709 - Data, Statistics & Probability for Middle School Teachers
MSM 711 - Linear Systems for Middle School Teachers
MSM 713 - Calculus for Middle School Teachers
MSM 715 - Discrete Mathematics for Middle School Teachers
MSM 717 - History of Mathematics for Middle School Teachers
A candidate with sufficient mathematics background may choose mathematics courses with an MAT prefix in consultation with the program coordinator.

*Students whose background in mathematics is strong, may, with the permission of the program coordinator, substitute one or more of the above MSM mathematics courses with one of the listed electives below.
