The MAT in Spanish offers initial licensure in either elementary (P-6) or secondary (5-12) Spanish. Developed in response to the increased need in North Shore communities for well-trained and licensed Spanish teachers, this program meets the pedagogical and content standard requirements of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education for licensure.
The Advanced Studies track is available for students not seeking initial licensure.

Please note that the statement of purpose that is submitted as part of the application process for this program must be written in Spanish.
For those seeking initial licensure, a Provisional license in Spanish (P-6 or 5-12) is required. Provisional licensure includes a passing score on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL), both the Communication and Literacy tests and the Spanish subject area test, in addition to other requirements.
Students who have no teacher preparation coursework or who do not possess a bachelor’s degree in the major should consult with the program coordinator.

Program Requirements
Upon acceptance into the program, you will complete a tentative Plan of Study in consultation with the program coordinator. You must request that any transfer credits be considered at this time. Please note that no more than three courses taken at Salem State University before admission can be counted towards this program. You should meet regularly with the program coordinator to discuss your progress and revise your plan of study as needed. Students enrolled in the MAT in Spanish choose one of four tracks: Initial level licensure (Elementary or Secondary) for those with a Provisional license, and Advanced Studies level program (Elementary or Secondary) for those seeking their Professional license or who are not seeking licensure (Elementary or Secondary). All students complete the Spanish content core (5 courses for the initial tracks and 6 courses for the Advanced track), which includes a capstone monograph course. Initial Level Licensure, Master in Teaching Spanish (Elementary P-6 or Secondary 5-12) 36.5 - 39.5 credits:
Licensure Preparation State (Introduce): Education Core (9 credits)
Licensure Preparation Stage IIA (Practice): Methods (5.5 credits)
Licensure Preparation Stage IIB (Practice):Advanced Teaching Methods (4 credits)
Licensure Preparation Stage III (Demonstrate): Practicum (3-6 credits)
*NOTE: Elementary (P-6) or Secondary (5-12) Initial Licensure students must have completed the twelve credits of education content courses, the two semester Methods course (EDC782 and EDC783), six credits of Spanish content courses and have passed the OPic proficiency exam before applying for student teaching The six credits in Spanish cannot include SPN 700 or SPN 900 Content Core: (15 credits)

Education Courses: 4 Education courses (it is strongly suggested that they include EDC 782 /EDC 783 ), selected in consultation with the program coordinator. Courses in Spanish (18 credits)
Research Courses (6 credits)
Advanced Studies program: 36 credits
Variable Credit
Variable credit programs are designed to address a student’s academic plan while adhering to the program requirements and standards of the profession. Based on their background (e.g., prior coursework, select endorsements), some students may be approved for the minimum number of credits of the program and other students may need additional coursework. Students will work with the Graduate Program Coordinator to determine the best fit of courses within the structure of the program and propose the Plan of Study to the School of Graduate Studies for review and approval. |
