Return to: Graduate Programs
The initial license-only in TESOL program is designed for those who already have a master’s degree in another field or those who have an initial or professional license in another content area. This program allows students to obtain a PK-6 or 5-12 Massachusetts teacher educator license in ESL without pursing the entire master’s degree.
Admission Requirements
Program Requirements
Upon acceptance into the program, you will complete a tentative Plan of Study in consultation with the program coordinator. You must request that any transfer credits be considered at this time. Please note that no more than three courses taken at Salem State University before admission can be counted towards this program. You should meet regularly with the program coordinator to discuss your progress and revise your plan of study as needed.

Licensure Preparation Phase I: TESOL Core (Introduce: 15 credits)
Licensure Preparation Phase II: TESOL Methods (Practice: 8 credits)
Licensure Preparation Phase III: Practicum (Demonstrate: 4.5 - 9 credits)
Variable Credit
Variable credit programs are designed to address a student’s academic plan while adhering to the program requirements and standards of the profession. Based on their background (e.g., prior coursework, select endorsements), some students may be approved for the minimum number of credits of the program and other students may need additional coursework. Students will work with the Graduate Program Coordinator to determine the best fit of courses within the structure of the program and propose the Plan of Study to the School of Graduate Studies for review and approval. All students must have coursework that meets the standards outlined by NCATE/TESOL and the Massachusetts DESE. Participants will also complete a student teaching practicum. The program coordinator will review an applicant’s transcripts against the required standards of the DESE and TESOL and may require additional coursework to ensure that all standards and competencies are met. |
