The Bilingual Education Certificate (BEC) is designed to meet the requirements for PreK through 12 teachers wishing to teach or are currently teaching in a program where instruction is delivered in two languages to earn the DESE Bilingual Education Endorsement. The program provides a strong grounding in the research and practices to teach emerging bilingual students including foundations of programming, language acquisition and biliteracy development, and the multicultural facets of teaching and interaction with parents and the community. This certificate program includes a four foundation course sequence with a 75-hour field experience in a bilingual school setting such as a transitional bilingual, two-way immersion or other bilingual school setting. Students must have or be seeking initial licensure in an appropriate subject and demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English. The program can be followed independently or as part of an initial licensure program. Field-based assignments are required.
