MUS 100 - Introduction to Music 3 Credit(s) DI
This course explores music of selected periods of Western European culture. Emphasis is placed on how to listen to music. No prior knowledge of music is necessary. Students will be introduced to major composers and music of each period. Discussion will focus on the characteristics of each musical period and how they are reflected in music, the aesthetic qualities of each work discussed, and the lives of the composers and the times in which they lived. Three lecture hours per week. Attendance at performances/concerts outside of class is required. Required in the Music minor.

This course addresses music as a social phenomenon, inseparable from its cultural context. Therefore, students will study not only a variety of styles and repertoires of music from around the world but also the behaviors, beliefs, and histories of those who make music. Students are encouraged to use the study of music as a tool to analyze broader patterns and dynamics of human activity. This course will introduce students to a variety of computer-based technologies designed for use in personal and professional recording studios, music performances and music education. Students will explore how computers enhance music production and will develop the skills required to choose hardware and software solutions to meet specific technological needs. Students will also gain an understanding of basic computing concepts, e.g. input/output, file formats, memory, and data storage, and their implementation within the field of music technology. Lecture and projects will focus on Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), Desktop Publishing, CD (Graphic) Design and production of music for multimedia and web applications. This is a course for Music Majors that teaches the fundamental skills required to play the piano. This course helps prepare students for the Piano Proficiency Exam. This project-based course develops students’ understanding of global computing concepts as well as their relationship to hardware and software used in the music industry. Students will explore basic computing concepts, e.g. data storage, file types, memory, input/output devices, and their implementation in the music field. Topics studied will include MIDI sequencing, Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), educational software, electronic press kits (EPKs), and production for multimedia and web applications. Projects in each topic examined will be undertaken. Percussion Ensemble explores the many facets of contemporary music, ethnic rhythms, and diversity of cultures through percussion. A class in the principles of music theory, with an emphasis on how they relate to jazz and improvisation. This course covers music literature from the late Classical era of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven through the Romantic period and modernism of the early 20th Century. Emphasis will center on the apex and gradual decline of tonal structures. Outside concert attendance and listening outside of class will be required. Topics include hybrid modes, complex harmonic structures, continuation of chord/scale theory, and study of compositions and improvisational techniques since 1960. Ear training, listening, and analysis are important components of the class. There will be some lab activities involving application of the concepts learned to one’s primary instrument. Concentrated study of repertoire from the 20th Century, Post-war European fascination with jazz, neoclassicism and serialism is geared to complement MUS 432 . IVes, Cowell, Harris, Bernstein, and Copland are included from the American School. After World War II, the influences of popular music such as swing, jazz, and rock ‘n roll are studied in the serious music of Adams, Corigliano, Zappa and Glass. An introduction to audio recording; digital editing, mixing, and mastering. Students will learn microphone types, uses, and placement; stereo and multi-track recording and mixing; and digital editing, signal processing, and mastering. This is a course that offers students a chance to focus an entire semester on the music of specific cultures, regions, or issues. Topics may vary, but the goal of each class will be to use the tools of ethnomusicology to investigate human musical activity in context, with a focus on cultures outside Europe. Themes to be discussed in a comparative perspective include race, class, gender, religion, and language. Students will explore the ways in which these themes intersect with human musical activity.
