MUS 114 - Introduction to Computers and Music

This course will introduce students to a variety of computer-based technologies designed for use in personal and professional recording studios, music performances and music education. Students will explore how computers enhance music production and will develop the skills required to choose hardware and software solutions to meet specific technological needs. Students will also gain an understanding of basic computing concepts, e.g. input/output, file formats, memory, and data storage, and their implementation within the field of music technology. Lecture and projects will focus on Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), Desktop Publishing, CD (Graphic) Design and production of music for multimedia and web applications. Three lecture hours per week. Satisfies an elective in the Music Minor. Additional lab hours required.
