MUS 505 - Seminar: Topics in Ethnomusicology

3 Credit(s) DI V
This is a course that offers students a chance to focus an entire semester on the music of specific cultures, regions, or issues. Topics may vary, but the goal of each class will be to use the tools of ethnomusicology to investigate human musical activity in context, with a focus on cultures outside Europe. Themes to be discussed in a comparative perspective include race, class, gender, religion, and language. Students will explore the ways in which these themes intersect with human musical activity. Assignments will include listening, reading, video-viewing, and concert attendance. Students are required to do an individual research project and give an oral presentation at the end of the semester. Open to all students. Three lecture hours per week. Different topics may be repeated for credit.
