ENL 343 British Fiction in the Nineteenth Century

A critical survey of major British novelists of the nineteenth century, with an emphasis on the blend of the Romantic, VIctorian, and Realistic traditions found in their works. The readings will be drawn from such writers as Austen, the Brontes, Dickens, Eliot, and Hardy. Three lecture hours per week. Not open to students who have received credit for ENG 335. Prerequisite: ENG 102, ENL 102, ENG 102E,

ENG 103, ENL 103, ENG 106H or

ENL 106H,

and at least one English course at the 200- level or permission of the department chairperson.
