Students wishing to achieve an Initial license to teach English at the secondary school level (grades 8-12) in Massachusetts, can apply for the Secondary Education Minor within the B.A. program in English. Candidates for teacher licensure in Massachusetts must also pass three Massachusetts Tests for Educators Licensure (MTEL): Communication, Literacy, and the English Subject Test. Students in this minor should meet with the department’s Secondary Education Coordinator as soon as possible to review requirements for eligibility. The following courses address the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requirements for Initial Licensure:

English Courses for Secondary Licensure (36 credits)
Shakespeare Course
Choose one Shakespeare Course: Two Literature Electives
Choose two literature courses. To satisfy the two literature courses electives, English majors wishing to teach should consider courses in literary criticism, major authors and literary periods. Education Component (27 credits total)
All Secondary Education students will take the following four education courses: Pre-Practicum Methods Course (3 credits)
Student Teaching Practicum and Seminar (12 Credits)
American Government and Psychology Support Courses (6 credits)
