Program Objectives
This 36-credit program is designed for those wishing to prepare for initial licensure as a teacher in interdisciplinary general science, Grades 5-8, or seeking to enhance their knowledge of science or science teaching. Salem State University only endorses students in this program for the initial license in general science. However, experienced teachers who otherwise meet the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education criteria for professional licensure may elect to use this degree program to apply on their own to the MDESE for professional license.
Additional Program Requirements
Before applying for the practicum the following undergraduate courses (or their equilivent) must be completed, with a grade of C or higher, at an accredited institution of higher education: CHE124 or equivalent, PHS101A or equivalent, adolescent psychology or its equivalent. One Biology course with a laboratory component, and one Geological Sciences course with a laboratory component. Any undergraduate science prerequisite for a graduate course must be fulfilled before registering. Additional courses may be required to meet the content requirements for state licensure, based on the background of the student.

Additional Information and Notes
*Depending on circumstances, students may instead elect to take EDU 925SCA and EDU 925SCB . Each course is worth 1.5 credits.
Candidates for initial licensure must take and pass all required sections of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure prior to entering the practicum. |
