Middle School Mathematics, Initial Licensure Option, Master of Arts in Teaching

Objectives

The initial license option of the MAT Middle School Mathematics program is designed for those seeking to obtain initial license to teach middle school mathematics (5-8) in conjunction with their master’s degree.

Program Requirements

All candidates must

• complete a course in Adolescent Psychology
• must pass the Communication and Literacy MTEL prior to admission
• complete a minimum of 39 credit hours of graduate course work (described below)
• pass the Middle School Mathematics MTEL by the time 15 credits of mathematics courses in the program have been completed

Core Mathematics courses (15 credits)

• MSM 701 - Patterns, Relations, and Algebra for Middle School Teachers
• MSM 703 - Precalculus for Middle School Teachers
• MSM 705 - Geometry and Measurement for Middle School Teachers
• MSM 707 - Number Systems for Middle School Teachers
• MSM 709 - Data, Statistics & Probability for Middle School Teachers

Content-Based Methods Course (3 credits)

• MAT 702N - Research on Teaching Methods in Mathematics I

Practicum and Seminar (6 credits)

• EME 990PM - Practicum in Middle School Mathematics
• EME 990SM - Practicum Seminar in Middle School Mathematics

Electives (choose two, 6 credits)

• MSM 711 - Linear Systems for Middle School Teachers
