Program Objectives
This 36-credit program is designed for those wishing to prepare for initial licensure as a teacher in interdisciplinary general science, Grades 5-8, or seeking to enhance their knowledge of science or science teaching. Salem State University only endorses students in this program for the initial license in general science. However, experienced teachers who otherwise meet the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education criteria for professional licensure may elect to use this degree program to apply on their own to the MDESE for professional license.
Additional Program Requirements
All graduate science courses have undergraduate prerequisites that must be met before registering. Prerequisites do not have to be taken for admission, but must be completed when required. Additionally, students must complete Adolescent Psychology or its equivalent prior to the Practicum. All prerequisites must be completed with a grade of C or higher at an accredited institution of higher education. To ensure that all requirements are appropriately met, any prerequisite not listed below or taken at another institution must be pre-approved by the Program Coordinator.

Additional Information and Notes
*Depending on circumstances, students may instead elect to take EDU 925SCA and EDU 925SCB . Each course is worth 1.5 credits.
Candidates for initial licensure must take and pass all required sections of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure prior to entering the practicum. |
