ART 335 The History of Photography

3 Credit(s) CEA
Can you imagine a world without photographs?  Do you know what forces led to the 19th-century invention of photography and its current dominance as a visual medium?  This course explores the history of photography from aesthetic, technical, and socio-cultural perspectives.  We will analyze iconic and lesser-known images as both art objects and historical artifacts.  We will also learn about the camera’s evolution, diverse technical processes, and photographic theories and methodologies.  Course requirements include visits, at students’ expense, to museums in Salem and the Boston area.  Three lecture hours per week.
