POL 384 Democracy and Dictatorship

3 Credit(s)
Democracy has been on the decline globally since the mid-2000s—while populism, nationalism, and authoritarianism are thriving. Not only are authoritarian regimes increasingly effective at repressing dissent and surveilling their citizens—democratic norms also seem to be brittle everywhere, even in established democracies. Join us to analyze these concerning trends and to debate democracy’s future, both in the United States and abroad. The class will participate in a cross-university collaborative and an in-class simulation exercise. Three lecture hours per week.
