EEC 303 Emergent Literacy Curriculum and Pedagogy in Early Childhood

This course is designed for candidates who work with children aged 0-8. This course introduces to candidates to instructional methods of emergent literacy learning in culturally and linguistically diverse early childhood settings and working with young children with exceptional learning needs. Candidates learn to design, facilitate, and implement instruction that incorporates evidence-based strategies, and supports literacy (reading, writing) and language development (speaking, listening, vocabulary) as addressed in the MA Curriculum Framework for English Language Arts and Literacy (Department of Education, 2017). The essential role of literacy and its relationship to other curriculum areas and social emotional learning is explored. Using literacy assessment to inform and differentiate instruction is discussed. Candidates critically evaluate digital and print instructional materials and assessments with attention to social justice, anti-bias, CRT, and UDL practices for use with young children.  Field-based assignments are required.
