EDS 390 Introduction to Special Education

This course provides an overview of the key concepts and issues relevant to the education of individuals with exceptional learning needs. Candidates will be introduced to the broad categories of students with disabilities, current theories of disability etiologies, how a learner’s environment and social context shapes their education, and research-based interventions to support learners’ social, academic, and behavioral progress. This overview will be situated in the historical foundations of special education and current state and federal laws pertaining to the education of individuals with exceptional learning needs. Three lecture hours per week.Field-based assignments required.
